Robert Willis McCullough

Robert Willis McCullough passed away May 11, 2016 at the age of 83. Mr. McCullough was born on December 26, 1932 in Rockbridge County, VA to Ralph D. McCullough and Margaret S. McCullough. Robert attended Rockbridge County Schools and earned a Junior Accountant Certificate from Phillips Business College in June of 1952. After college, he joined the United State Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged honorably as Sargent after four years of service. He married Lois Marie Roark on October 27, 1952 and they celebrated 63 years of marriage. They have one daughter, Lisa Laverne McCullough Green.                 In September of 1956 Robert began at Lynchburg College where he attended two summer sessions and then graduated class of 1959. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with double majors in Business Administration and Economics. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Lynchburg College. On May 14, 1994 he was awarded a Doctor of Humanities degree by Liberty University. Robert was also the Executive Director at Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantation in Brookneal, VA for 31 years where he was the father to many. Under his leadership the program expanded to four locations. He retired on June 30, 1995 where he resided with his wife in South Boston, VA. Mr. McCullough was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in South Boston, VA where he faithfully served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, mission’s committee chairman, and hospital visitation committee chairman. Robert was also a member of the Lion’s Club International where he served a total of 50 years. He was also a member of the Gideon’s, Jaycees, Dan River Baptist Association, and Board of Patrick Henry Boys Plantation, and American Legion Post 8.                 He was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and loved his family. He touched so many lives and has left an unforgettable legacy to all that knew him. Mr. McCullough was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret S. McCullough, father, Ralph D. McCullough, sister, Carol M. Shorter, brothers-in-law, Wade Shorter, and Jim London. He is survived by his wife, Lois R. McCullough, daughter, Lisa M. Green, son, Charles Green, sister, Barbara London, and granddaughter, Tiffany Green. He is also survived by a large extended family including many nieces and nephews.                 Arrangements will be made by Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, VA. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. and other times at his home 3197 Alexander Ave., South Boston, VA.  Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of South Boston on Sunday May 15, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Susan Davis and Rev. Dave Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military rites.
