Charles Weatherford Crowder, Sr.

Charles Weatherford Crowder Sr., a devoted husband, loving father and Papa, brother, uncle, and cherished friend, passed away on September 21 at the age of 82.

Charles was born on September 21, 1944, to the late Robert Anderson Crowder, affectionately known as “Daddy Ray,” and Elma Weatherford Crowder. Raised on the family farm, Charles learned from an early age the value of hard work, family, and taking care of the people you love. Those values remained at the heart of the man he was throughout his life.

He grew up alongside his siblings, Louis “Dickie” Crowder, Douglas “Doug” Crowder, and Jane Spencer, with whom he shared a close and special bond.

As a young man, Charles married the love of his life, Joan Andrews Crowder. Together, they built a beautiful life and shared 54 years of marriage before her passing. Their marriage was one of love, devotion, hard work, and commitment to family. Charles loved Joan deeply, and the life and family they created together remained among his greatest accomplishments.

Charles and Joan were blessed with three children, whom he loved beyond measure: Kimberly Tysinger (Darryl), who preceded him in death; Charles “CW” Crowder Jr. (Christy); and Jennifer McGregor (Mike). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Sara Tysinger, Samantha Nunn (Forrest), Kendall Crowder, and Brett Crowder.

Charles retired from Dan River Mills after many years of dedicated service as a loom technician. He was a hardworking man in every sense. Providing for his family was important to him, and his family knew they could always depend on him. He worked hard so that those he loved never had to go without, and he taught his children through his example the meaning of responsibility, perseverance, and taking pride in an honest day’s work.

Although he spent many years working at the mill, farming was always a part of who Charles was. He loved tractors, farming, and few things made him happier than being in a hay field. He was also an avid and accomplished deer hunter. Hunting was more than a pastime for Charles—it was something he genuinely loved and enjoyed throughout his life.

Charles attended Beth Car Baptist Church and was of the Baptist faith and a man who valued family above nearly everything else. He loved deeply and wholeheartedly. He was funny, enjoyed making people laugh, and truly never met a stranger. His easy way with people blessed him with many close and lifelong friends.

Those who knew Charles will remember a hardworking man with a strong spirit, a good sense of humor, and an enormous love for his family. His children will remember a daddy who worked tirelessly to provide for them, who was there when they needed him, and who taught them to love hard, work hard, and never settle for less than the best in life.

His grandchildren will remember a Papa who adored them, and his family and friends will remember countless stories, laughs, hunting memories, days on the farm, and the simple moments that made life together so special.

Charles leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply in years. It lives in the family he raised, the lessons he taught, the friendships he made, and the love he gave so freely.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joan Andrews Crowder; his daughter, Kimberly Tysinger; his parents, Robert Anderson “Daddy Ray” Crowder and Elma Weatherford Crowder and brother Louis “Dickie” Crowder.

He is survived by his children, Charles “CW” Crowder Jr. (Christy) and Jennifer McGregor (Mike); son-in-law, Darryl Tysinger; grandchildren, Sara Tysinger, Samantha Nunn (Forrest), Kendall Crowder, and Brett Crowder; his siblings, Douglas “Doug” Crowder, and Jane Spencer (Grady); numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family members and dear friends who were blessed to know and love him.

A funeral service to honor Charles’s memory will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Powell Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at 1160 Cage Trail South Boston, VA.

Charles spent his life taking care of the people he loved. Though his family will miss his voice, his laughter, his stories, and simply knowing Daddy was there, the life he lived will continue to be seen in the people he loved and the family he worked so hard to build.

A hardworking man. A devoted husband. A loving Daddy and Papa. A farmer at heart. A hunter. A friend to many. And a man whose family was always his greatest treasure.
