Dabney Thomas Poindexter Gilliam, Sr. of Halifax passed away on September 29, 2026 at the age of 95. He was born in Pamplin City, VA on January 1, 1931 to the late Willie Connie Gilliam and the late Eliza Frances Gills Gilliam. He was the last of their nine children to pass. He was married to the late Barbara Watts Gilliam, mother of his children. Dabney was also preceded in death by wives, Mary F. Gilliam and Lorene D. Gilliam.

Dabney was a member of First Presbyterian Church and proudly served in the United States Naval Reserves. He attended E.C. Glass High School and was a member of the football team which won the 1950 State Championship, and he received the Virginia State Award for the 100 Yard Dash. Dabney retired from Standard Oil Company after many years of dedicated service. In his spare time, he enjoyed quail hunting, golf, and spending time with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dabney Thomas Poindexter “Dexter” Gilliam, Jr. (Sevanne) of Halifax, Katherine “Kathy” Lynn Gilliam Ruffin of Lexington, VA; nine grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Bryan Keith Gilliam.

A memorial service will be held On Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John McCarthy officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home.
