Mrs. Dean Childress Payne of Paces, VA passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024 in Yadkinville, NC. She was born in Pittsylvania County November 9, 1927 and was 96 years old. She was the daughter of the late Harvey Bunion Childress and the late Lizzie Soyars Childress and was married to the late Albert Hudson Payne. She was a member of Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church and was a former employee of Turbeville Elementary School where she drove a school bus and worked in the cafeteria. She was also a floral designer with the former Giles Florist and worked at Health Tex in Danville Her annual garden was her pride and joy. She spent many hours cultivating and harvesting her garden and canning the vegetables it produced. She was later named Gardener Emeritus with the Master Gardeners. She loved her family and cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Ken Willis, Sisters Martha Ann Barber, Elaine Childress, and Mary Ellen Scearce and brothers, John Childress and Bernard Childress, and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Payne.
A funeral service will be held at Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church, 3068 Wooding Rd., Sutherlin, VA 24594, on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Don Nance and Rev. Joyce Perez officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside service. At all other times, the family will be at the home of Harvey Payne, 5176 Melon Rd., South Boston, VA.
