Doris Anne Cox Powell

Doris Anne "D.A." Cox Powell of South Boston, formerly of Halifax, Virginia, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024, at the age of 81. She was born on May 22, 1942, in Danville, Virginia, the daughter of the late Samuel Pace "Sam" Cox and the late Helena Anne Motley Cox. She was married for 61 years to Douglas Waller Powell, who survives. 
 
  She is also survived by three children, Daniel W. Powell (Katina) of Powhatan, Virginia, Donald W. Powell (Christina) of Roanoke, Virginia, and Deanne Powell Shaw (Kelly) of King George, Virginia, and five grandchildren, Caleb Shaw, Nathan Powell, Hannah Shaw, Rebecca Shaw, and Alexander Powell. She was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Robert Cox.

 D. A. graduated from George Washington High School in Danville in 1960 and attended Madison College in Harrisonburg. She was very active in the Girl Scouts in the Danville area during her youth.  She spent her child rearing years as a homemaker, following living and working in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1963-65 during Douglas's military service. While there they visited most of the Western European countries. Earlier they lived in Texas and Alabama during his pilot training. She later retired following employment at Halifax County Junior High School.

She was a member of Halifax United Methodist Church, a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a former volunteer at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was a life member of the Virginia Airstream Club and was its President in 1996-97. She and Douglas enjoyed traveling with their Airstream RV friends for 39 years, including frequent stays for 35 years during the summers in an Airstream park in Floyd County.  Their travels took them to all of the East Coast states from northern New England, south to Key West, and west to Utah. They traveled to many Virginia Tech football games, including multiple New Orleans bowl games. She was a local Hokie Club representative for many years and was once on the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund Board.

D. A. was a former member of the Berryman Green Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and also the Halifax County Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

A memorial service will be held at Halifax United Methodist Church at 133 Mountain Road, Halifax, VA, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 20, 2024 with Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck and Rev. Thad Decker officiating.

 The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Interment will follow on a later date at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia.
