Douglas VanVoorhees Bowman, 83, of South Boston, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was born October 5,1942 in Washington, D.C. to Mary Batts Bowman and Lester Inglis Bowman. He was predeceased by his son, Matthew Todd Bowman.

Douglas is survived by his beloved wife, Meredith Howerton Bowman, sister, Anne Erickson and husband Chuck of Vero Beach, Fl., granddaughter, Brooke Boone and husband Mason of Raleigh, N.C., aunt, Emily Batts of Whispering Pines, N.C. and daughter-in-law, Danielle Bowman of Virginia Beach, Va. He is also survived by stepsons, Ward Burton and wife Tabitha, Brian Burton and wife Judith of South Boston, Va. Jeff Burton and wife Kim of Huntersville, N.C., as well as grandchildren, Sarah Graper(Gordy), Jeb Burton (Amanda), Ashton Burton, Alexander Burton, Paige Burton-Curtis (Pete), Harrison Burton (Jenna), also great grandchildren, Caroline and Clara Graper, Elyse and Easton Oslosky.

Douglas was a graduate of Petersburg High School and The University of Virgina, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Commerce. Douglas had a successful and extensive career in banking as president of Crestar Bank in South Boston and retired as president from Crestar/Sun Trust Bank in Radford, Va.

Douglas was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as treasurer and was a member of the vestry. His love and involvement for the community of South Boston extended to being a founding member of the Continuing Education Center, and served on the Southside Planning District Commission, Tri River Habitat For Humanity and the Prizery. He was also proud to serve three terms on the Halifax County Board of Supervisors as chairman of the finance committee.

Douglas was an ardent supporter of all University of Virginia sports teams and enjoyed tennis and golf. He was a Los Angeles Dodgers fan and attended many Nascar races. He was the proud captain of his pontoon boat, “ Scotch and Water” at the lake. Douglas was known for his quick sense of humor, his great love for the ocean and beautiful sunsets. He enjoyed sharing this love with friends and family at his Nags Head beach house, “Mermaid and Me.”

The family is grateful for Mr. Bowman’s kind caregivers, Cheryl Bowman and Rhonda Reaves and the wonderful care provided by Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Ridge Cemetery, 2500 North Main Street, South Boston.

In lieu of flowers consider a memorial donation to Trinity Episcopal Church, 515 Yancey Ave. South Boston, Va. 24592.
