On the morning of Sunday, August 3, 2025, Dr. Leovigil Daguio “Leo” Pambid, MD, 84, was called back to the Lord while sleeping at his home, his wife Vilma sitting next to him. Born on August 20, 1940, in Batac, Ilocos Norte Province, The Philippines, he was the son of Gregorio C. and Estelita D. Pambid.
A country boy at heart, he travelled to the big city of Manila to attend medical school at Far Eastern University, graduating in 1965. While in school, he met the one and only love of his life, and they were wed on November 26, 1962.
He then emigrated to the United States in 1967 to complete his training in Fordham, New York; Plainfield, New Jersey; and Providence, Rhode Island, eventually specializing in internal medicine. After practicing in Sylvester, West Virginia, he arrived in South Boston, Virginia, in 1975, where he treated many and served his community for over 45 years until his retirement in 2022.
A deep, spiritual, and philosophical man of many talents, he enjoyed life through performing music on his guitar and ukelele, traveling the world, fishing Southern Virginia’s waters, cultivating fruits and vegetables in his garden, cooking, reading, telling stories, and mastering the game of chess. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with Vilma, no matter where they were or what they were doing.
He also supported revitalization and historic preservation projects downtown, as well the arts. He instilled in his children his own ethic of academics and community service, raising a health care instructor, a US Marine and public administrator, and a law enforcement officer, seven college degrees among them alone.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Wilfred and Neciforo. He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy his wife of 61 years, Vilma N. Pambid and his daughter, Agnes N. Pambid, of South Boston, Virginia, his sons Leander N. “Lee” Pambid of Accomac, Virginia, and Leo V. Pambid, and his grandchildren, Aaliyah Pambid and Jaydon Pambid, all of South Boston, Virginia. He is also survived by his sisters Perlita Pambid Avila of Bownmanville, Ontario, Canada, Clarita Pambid Calautit of London, Ontario, Canada, and brother Epifanio Pambid of San Pablo, California, and several nieces and nephews.
He attended church at Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Church.
Dr. Pambid’s family extends their gratitude to the professionals at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, HCA Virginia- Chippenham Hospital, and the many others too numerous to name along the way who provided medical care, hospice support, and transportation services.
His family will hold a private service prior to cremation and will announce a celebration of life later.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to an organization you are passionate about or planting a tree.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to Powell Funeral Home, 1603 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, VA.
