Florence Eleanor Helvey Wilkerson

Florence Eleanor Helvey Wilkerson of South Boston passed away September 2, 2025 at the age of 92. She was born in Pikeville, KY to the late Zenith and Elizabeth Helvey. She was married to the late James (Tom) Wilkerson.

Florence dedicated over 40 years of her life as a nurse at Halifax Hospital in South Boston, VA. Nursing was not just her profession but her true calling—she found joy in caring for others and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She had a deep love for animals of all kinds, with a special fondness for dogs. Any stray that happened upon her yard was never a stranger for long—they were soon met with food, care and kindness. She also delighted in the simple joys of life, whether it was hunting for treasures at garage sales or sharing laughter and conversation with friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her sister, Betty Keesee of Port Orange, FL; nieces and nephews, Michael Keesee and wife Debbie of Port Orange Fl, Stephen Helvey and wife Brenda of Gainesville, FL, Theresa Newcomb of South Daytona, FL, Gail Frazier and husband Walter of Tampa, FL, and Diane Helvey of Lutz, FL; brothers-in-law, Robert Wilkerson and wife Kathy of South Boston, Mac Allen Wilkerson and wife Becky of South Boston; sisters-in-law, Marie Thompson and Phyllis Cook of South Boston.

She was preceded in death by Siblings, Charles Helvey, Edward Helvey and Grace Runyon; nephews, Ricky Runyon, and Terry Helvey; brothers-in-law, Lloyd (Punch) Wilkerson and David Wilkerson; sister-in-law, Peggy Buchanan.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered love, support, and kindness to Florence during her final months. Your visits, calls, and thoughtful gestures brought her great comfort and meant so much to her and to all of us.
