Listen to Obituary

George Edward Glascock, Sr. of Scottsburg, Va. passed away at home in the early morning hours of April 16, 2026, at the age of 81. He was born in Halifax County, Va. On November 27, 1944 to the late Howard and Rosa Dunn Glascock, and remained a resident to Halifax County all his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Cheryl Lunsford Glascock.

George was known for being a hard worker and quit school at the age of 12 years old to start working a full-time job as a roofer during the day and working at the movie theatre at night. He may have only had a 6th grade education, but he never allowed that to handicap him. He started working at J.P. Stevens, or the mill as he called it, when he was 19. He worked hard and would pick up any shifts that he could. It didn’t take him long to be promoted to a supervisor where he continued until he left for a job in the construction of the Hyco Power Plant in Roxboro, NC. While working on that job site, he met Ray Crews and later went to work for Piedmont Maintenance & Service out of Roxboro, where he worked until his retirement in 2006 as a construction superintendent. Since he was a hard worker, he expected his crew to work hard too and his men respected him for it. George may have been a tough man on the job site, but he had a big heart for his family. His reasoning for starting to work so young was not so much to get ahead in life, but to help support his single mother. He loved his mother very much and proved that love for many years by not only taking care of her but allowing her to live in his home until her death. He married young at the age of 17 and became a father the next year.

He worked hard to provide a home for his family and also allowed his mother-in-law to live with them until her last days as well. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much and there was no secret about that. He may have been known as George to most people, but to his family he was called Pop. There were many family memories made at Pop and Namie’s house throughout the years and everyone will be cherished.

Along with his love for family, he loved to coon hunt and fish in his younger years, but his passion later in life was farming. He enjoyed seeing his cows grazing in the pasture and looked forward to every Saturday when he would head to (the cow sale) as he called it at the Spring Lake Stock Yard in Moneta, VA. He enjoyed sharing that time with his close friends, Mike Rose, Ronnie Ratliff, Frankie Cheek, Rick Howard, and his son Eddy Glascock. He also enjoyed planting a large garden every year with his wife and was proud to show it off and give away some of the harvest.

In addition to his wife Cheryl, he is survived by his son George Edward Glascock, Jr. (Eddy) and his wife Rhonda; his daughter Sheri Wetherington and her husband Mike; eight grandchildren: John, Jennifer, Jeana, Shera, Jaron, Stephen, Andrew, and Elyssa; fourteen great-grandchildren: James, Krista, Tyler, McKenzie, Madelyn, Melody, Hazel, Natalie, Lydia, Garrett, Ryland, Landon, Hudson, and Aurora. He is also survived by two very special nieces that he had an influential part in raising and treated them like his own children, Wendy Phillips, Danielle Seamster and her son Dallas who is also considered a grandson.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 10:00 A.M. at the Union Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at his home.
