Gladys Marie Whitt Lewis of South Boston passed away August 24, 2025 at the age of 87. She was born in Halifax County on July 5, 1938 to the late Johnnie Green Whitt and the late Ida Ford Whitt. She was married to the late Ernest Wilson Lewis, Sr.
She was a member of Revelation Baptist Church. Gladys had a passion for gardening, planting flowers and watching hummingbirds. She still enjoyed working outside, cutting grass, weed eating, blowing leaves and when she wasn’t outside, she loved to crochet afghans, dish rags and sewing. She had an unwavering commitment to her family and her home, always creating a warm and welcoming space for everyone.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ida Tuck (Norman), Roberta Vaughan (John), Amanda Rathbun (Aaron), Patsy Harris (Jimmy Martin), Ernest Lewis, Jr. (Christina), Catherine Womack (Brad Walker); son-in-law, Charles Duffey, Sr.; thirteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; one sister, Alma Terry and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ernestine Duffey, one grandchild, two great grandchildren; her siblings, Rufus Whitt, William Whitt, Junior Whitt, Levi Whitt, Franklin Whitt, Talmadge Whitt, Hazel Whitt and Bobbie Lumsford; special friend, Soxe Allgood.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Barton officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Level Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home and other times at 2024 Jones Ferry Rd, South Boston.
