Halcott Green Heyward III died at the grand old age of 96 on November 18, 2025 in Roanoke, VA. He was born June 13, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, to Halcott Green Heyward Jr and Elizabeth Carrington Heyward. He spent much of his childhood in South Boston, Virginia and Columbia, South Carolina, and lived in Atlanta from 1954 to 1995.
He was a 1950 graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Mr. Heyward's career of 45 years involved property and casualty insurance. He served many years as the senior claims officer for a global insurance broker specializing in surplus lines coverages. As such he was involved with many prominent claims, including the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta and the DB Cooper hijacking in Washington State.
Upon retirement he lived in Holden Beach, North Carolina before moving to Penhook, Virginia in 2004, and then to Roanoke, Virginia in 2021. His lifelong interest in history, architecture, and interesting cars was reflected in his personal library of several thousand books. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was a gifted cartoonist and became an accomplished painter during his retirement.
Mr. Heyward was predeceased by his parents, wives Constance Holler Heyward, Mana Saffold Heyward, and Judith Powell Loop Heyward, sister Rene McBride of Virginia, brother Cabell Heyward of Stuart, Virginia, and daughter Reid Heyward Skubic of North Carolina.
He is survived by his daughter Cary Heyward of Cottage Grove, Oregon, sons Hack Heyward (Andi) of Bend, Oregon and William Heyward (Jennifer) of Atlanta, Georgia, many nieces, nephews and grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
The family wishes to thank his friends Bertha White and Lorrie and Greg Jones for their assistance in Dad’s later years.
A funeral service will be held on December 6, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Halifax, VA with the Rev. Kyle Stillings officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, December 5, 2025 from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home.
