Memorial Services for Hubert Merritt Younger, Jr., 78, who entered into rest on July 20, 2026, will be conducted on Sunday afternoon, July 26, 2026, at 4 o’clock at the Second Baptist Church of Beech Island, SC. Rev. Bobby Eubanks officiating. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Childrey Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Stanfield officiating.
Hugh was born on February 5, 1948, in Halifax County, VA, to the late Hubert Merritt, Sr. and Elizabeth Owen Younger and grew up on a tobacco farm near Volens, VA. He attended Volens Elementary School and graduated from Halifax County High School in 1966. He furthered his education, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Upper Iowa University in the early 1980s. His career in accounting and finance took him to various locations, including Lynchburg, VA, Culpeper, VA, Virginia Beach, VA, Hampton, New Hampshire, and Laurel, MD.
Throughout his life, Hugh also resided in Delaware, Florida, and most recently settled in South Carolina in 2023. Above all, Hubert was a devout Christian, and his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He was an avid target shooter, participating in competitions, and loved to hunt, especially on the family farm.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Edward Doss, Sr.
Surviving members of the family left to cherish his memory include his wife of 42 years, Melanie Hughes Younger; his step-daughter, Amanda Dawn (Malfi) Contreras; three step-grandchildren, Alexander, Jordan, and Nicolas Contreras; a sister, Mary Lois Younger Doss; a niece, Lanette (Tommy) Spencer; a nephew, Eddy Doss; great-nieces and nephew, Lauren Spencer, Alyssa Spencer, Kayla Spencer, and Colt Doss; and great-great-niece, Blakely Cash.
