Jeffrey Layne Chandler, of Halifax County, passed away on October 18, 2026, at the age of 72. Born in Halifax County on July 31, 1954, he was a man who was loved by all who knew him.
Jeffrey was the owner and operator of Halifax Auto Service, a role that reflected both his skill and his lifelong passion for automobiles. Cars were far more than an occupation to him; they were a true and enduring interest throughout his life. He was an avid car lover who enjoyed working on cars, attending and participating in car shows, driving his old cars, and collecting and building model cars. His enthusiasm for motorsports also showed in his love of NASCAR, and he enjoyed watching football games, no matter which teams were playing. Jeffrey was also an extremely good artist; he could draw anything and inherited that talent he from his mother.
Jeffrey was a member of South Boston Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended faithfully.
Along with his many interests, Jeffrey had a special affection for his pets. He loved his shop cats, his home cats, and his beloved dog, MJ, all of whom were part of the daily life he cherished.
Above all, Jeffrey will be remembered by the people who shared his life most closely. He is survived by his wife, Janice Chandler, his partner of 46 years, whose long and devoted marriage stood as a lasting testament to their life together; brother-in-law, Gerald Ferrell and wife Libby; special cousin, Greg Younger (Terri); and a host of extended family and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to his caregivers at home and at the hospital, Katie Dunn and the team of doctors and nurses at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital; and especially to his friends who went above and beyond the bounds of friendship. Jeffrey’s memory will remain close to the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service for Jeffrey will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home with Tommy M. Adams officiating. Burial to follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home.
