A well lived life of faith for 101 years ended with a Heavenly Homecoming for Joe Raymond “Jake” Greenwood on July 11, 2024.
Jake was born September 28, 1922, and lived in his boyhood home on Birch Elmo Road, Halifax, VA until he became a resident of Berry Hill Rehab and Health Center, South Boston, VA in 2014. He was the son of Benjamin Pace and Divola Tune Greenwood and was the last surviving sibling of four brothers and six sisters: one being his twin sister. Jake was also predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Astin Greenwood.
Mr. Greenwood has been honored many times as one of the oldest living World War II Veterans. He was active in church as a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church serving as a deacon and as the sole trustee until the church closed in 2011. Following the closure of Mt. Zion, he moved his membership to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church which welcomed him with loving arms and ministered to him as a resident of Berry Hill Nursing Home. Jake was very involved in community activities and was a founding member of the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department.
His life of faith and love for his Lord is revered by all who knew him and especially by his family; eleven nieces, six nephews, many cousins, their families, and his Astin-Merricks families as well.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Zion Church on Birch Elmo Road with Rev. Bill Wilkins, Rev. Bill Greenwood, and Ronald Merricks officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, a memorial gift be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund c/o Nancy Greenwood Scott, 111 Villa Rd, Newport News, VA 23601
