John Thomas "Tommy" Atkins, III

Mr. John Thomas “Tommy” Atkins III of Roanoke, VA, and formerly of Halifax County, VA passed away at his home in Roanoke on Saturday, March 15, 2024. He was born in Halifax County on October 22,1968 and was 55 years old.  He was the son of the late John Thomas Atkins Jr. and Jeanette Bowman Atkins who survives.  Tommy was a graduate of Halifax County High School, Virginia Western Community College, and Ferrum College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in business, computer science, and history.  He was a dedicated employee of Northwest Hardware Company of Roanoke for 32 years serving as Assistant Controller for 15 stores.

As a youth growing up in South Boston, Tommy played Dixie Youth Baseball.  He was a member of the 1980 Virginia State Championship team that went to Tennessee for the World Series.

Tommy was dedicated to caring for his mother. He made regular visits and supplied his mother with many of her household needs. On these trips home, he took his mother on Saturday excursions around the state.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Edna and John Atkins Sr. of Halifax and Myrtle and Jeff Bowman of Chase City.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Dan River Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. John Campbell conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the funeral and other times at the home of his mother.
