Lena Betterton Saunders

Mrs. Lena Betterton Saunders of Halifax, VA passed away Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Sentara Woodview Nursing Home.  She was born June 11, 1922 in Halifax County, VA and was 98 years old.  She was the daughter of the late John Bell McCormick and the late Mary Ellen Jones McCormick.  She was married first to the late John T. Betterton, Sr. and then to the late Holt Lester Saunders.

She was a member of the Winns Creek Baptist Church where she was known as Mrs. Santa Claus.  She was awarded the State Volunteer award and was nominated for the Governor’s award for volunteering.  She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer with Mental Health.

John Thomas Betterton, Jr. and wife Bonnie of Clayton, NC

Fourteen Grandchildren

Host of Great Grandchildren and Great-Great Grandchildren

One daughter, Martha Ann Langford

Nine brothers and sisters

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at the Winns Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Harvey Spencer and the Rev. Jim Kopco officiating. In keeping with CDC guidelines facemask and social distancing are recommended.

The family will receive friends following the service.
