L. Wayne Lewis

Mr. L Wayne Lewis was born on October 29, 1951 and died on April 14, 2021. He was born in South Boston, VA to Reva T. Lewis and the late “Byrd” Lewis. Wayne loved his family unconditionally, his friends, and was devoted and active at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He adored all ages of children, related or not, as they did, he.

In his younger days, he loved baseball and excelled as a left-handed pitcher. He represented Halifax County in the 1964 Dixie World Series. Later, he substituted golf, fishing, and a love for the beach and boating on the coast at Topsail Island. He was always the happiest spending valuable time and creating memories with his family and loved ones.

He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, his wife of nearly fifty-two years, Melinda S. Lewis. He is also survived by his mother Reva T. Lewis. Wayne had four treasured children, Michelle L. Holland, Michael Lewis and wife Amy R. Lewis, Lindsay L. Spencer and J.R. Spencer III, and Brittany Lewis. He had Five grandchildren: Bryant Holland, Brann Holland, Mia Ann Lewis, Aiden Lewis, and McKenlee Spencer. He had one great granddaughter, Harper Rose Holland. Wayne also had three siblings: Linda L. Tate and husband Charlie, Ricky Lewis and wife Becky, Renee L. White and husband Kevin. Additionally, he was survived by three aunts and one uncle as well as nine nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. He had countless numbers of friends he cherished.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, April 18, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Wilkins officiating. Burial to follow in church cemetery.  In Keeping with CC guidelines regarding COVID-19, we recommend the wearing of face masks and to practice social distancing.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home, 4403 Brentwood Dr. in South Boston.

Flowers are greatly appreciated as well as memorials to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 10149 Mountain Rd., Vernon Hill, VA 24597.
