Lorene Elizabeth DeJarnette Womble Gilliam

Lorene Elizabeth DeJarnette Womble Gilliam of Halifax, VA, passed away September 15, 2022. Born in Halifax County, VA, on June 1, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Louis William DeJarnette and Camilla Eanes Whitlow DeJarnette. She is survived by her husband Dabney Gilliam. Lorene received an undergraduate degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and a Masters from Longwood University. She was a life-long educator and taught English for many years before transferring to Project Idea in the Halifax County Public School System. Lorene also taught English at Danville Community College. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Halifax County Country Club and the YMCA. Lorene loved playing golf and was an avid reader. Lorene Gilliam is survived by: Her Husband: Dabney Gilliam of Halifax Her Children: Camye Elizabeth Womble of Raleigh, NC Mark Gregory Womble and wife, Heather, of Halifax Two Grandchildren: Dalton Gregory Womble and Reed Lee Womble of Halifax One Sister: Katherleen Smith and husband, E.T., of New Smyrna Beach, FL A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, September 23, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee and Rev. Glenn Coleman officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at her home. For memorials, please consider a charity of your choice.
