Mrs. Margaret Powell Canada of South Boston, Virginia passed away peacefully at South Boston Health and Rehab on Monday, August 17, 2026. She was born on January 8, 1927 in South Boston, Virginia and was 99 years of age. Mrs. Canada was the daughter of the late George Cleveland Powell and Eva Bliss Powell of South Boston. She was married to the late Dewey Lacy Canada.
Mrs. Canada is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Lee Smith of Scottsburg; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Diane Powell of South Boston; two devoted nieces; Mrs. Audrey Warren (Troy) and Ms. Jennifer Slagle (Doug) and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Canada was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Vena Watts, Luther Powell, Pauline Hancock, Elsie Owen, Dorothy Lacks, Hallie Hackney, Wilson Powell, Lanier Canada, Joseph Powell, Alton Powell, Lillian Smith and Calvin (Runt) Powell.
Mrs. Canada was a member of Revelation Baptist Church and when well, also attended Dan River Baptist Church and Scottsburg Baptist Church with her family. She spent much of her life working in textile; Burlington Industries, J.P. Stevens, and in 1966, she was one of the first employees to be hired at Tultex, formerly Sales Knitting, as a sewing machine operator. In 1968, Mrs. Canada was promoted to Sewing Supervisor where she worked until her retirement in 1989.
Mrs. Canada took great pride in being a homemaker. She was an exceptional cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Her rose gardens, fruit trees, and blackberry vines brought her much joy as did working in her yard. She enjoyed shopping and loved visiting her brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be held at Halifax Memorial Gardens on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 2:00 pm with family friend, Mr. Daniel Barker, officiating. Visitation will follow the service.
