Norma Murphy Eggleston

Norma Murphy Eggleston, passed away on November 2, 2023, at the age of 93. She was born on October 13, 1930, in Martinsville, Virginia to the late Edgar Frank and Vella (Asbury) Murphy. Norma's departure left a void in the hearts of all who knew her and will be deeply mourned by her loved ones.

In addition to being a dedicated mother to her sons Thomas Brice Eggleston, James Edgar Eggleston, and Roger Jackson Eggleston, Norma was also an outstanding storyteller who captivated all with her countless stories.

Bridge became one of Norma's favorite pastimes and an avenue through which she formed lifelong friendships. Playing Bridge with friends brought her immense joy as she relished both the strategic challenge of the game and the camaraderie it fostered.

Norma lived a life dedicated to hard work and perseverance. She embraced challenges head-on with an unwavering resolve that inspired those around her. Her tenacious spirit pushed the boundaries of her abilities, and she continuously aimed for excellence in everything she undertook. Norma's integrity, determination, and grit served as a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Surrounded by her loved ones, Norma peacefully passed away in South Boston, Virginia. Norma was predeceased by brother Alvin Murphy, son Thomas Brice Eggleston and son Roger Jackson Eggleston. Her legacy lives on through her surviving son James Edgar Eggleston and his wife Jane of Danville, Virginia; five grandchildren Alice St. Pierre, Lauren King, Brice Eggleston, Mary Clayton McGee, and James B. Eggleston; seven great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Rucker Eggleston (Thomas) of Topsail Beach, North Carolina.  

Services will be held at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, Virginia on Thursday, November 9th at 2:00pm. The family will hold visitation one hour prior to the service.

In honoring Norma's remarkable life, let us celebrate not only the great joy she brought into our lives. May we find solace in the cherished memories we hold dear and take inspiration from her unwavering spirit as we navigate our own journeys. Norma's passing leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but she will forever be remembered for her boundless generosity, unwavering love, and the enduring impact she had on those who were fortunate enough to know her.
