Phyllis Hughes Powell

Mrs. Phyllis Hughes Powell of Alton, Virginia passed away on Friday, July 31, 2026. She was born in Halifax County on April 14, 1939 and was 87 years old. She was the daughter of the late Robert Leslie Hughes and the late Elsie Louise Crenshaw Hughes. She was the wife of the late John R. (Bobby) Powell, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her loving daughter, Wanda Powell McEntire, and two brothers, Franklin Hughes and Joel Hughes.

Phyllis is survived by one son, John R. Powell, Jr (Mickie) of Creedmoor; son-in-law, Bill McEntire of Spindale, NC; grandchildren, Rob Powell (Alyssa) of Holly Springs, NC and Amanda Powell of Grand Prairie, TX; great grandchildren, Elijah Joseph Powell and Hannah Joy Powell of Holly Springs, NC; one sister, Joyce H. Covington (Willie) of Danville, VA; two brothers, Donnie Hughes (Sandi) of Halifax, VA and Wayne Hughes (Fran) of Reidsville, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Phyllis served the community for many years as the owner and operator of Seymour Interiors in South Boston. She was a devoted member of Alton Baptist Church where she served faithfully. She was a longtime Director of WMU at Alton Baptist Church, and an active member of the Dan River Baptist Association and the The Gideons International Auxiliary where she held various positions over the years. She also frequently volunteered locally with the Good Samaritan and the American Red Cross.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 7, 2026 from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at Powell Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Alton Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill McEntire officiating.
