Robert “Leon” Plaster devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2026. He was born in Henry County to Cecil and Elva Plaster.
Leon graduated from Fieldale High School and The University of Virginia with a degree in electrical engineering in 1961. He began his career in Staunton, Virginia with Westinghouse which took him to Pennsylvania before settling in South Boston in 1969. He was a long time member of The First Presbyterian Church where he served as elder, deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher.
Leon’s dedication to his community was reflected by his service as the mayor of Halifax and president of both The Rotary Club and The Lions Club. He served on the Board of Directors of Danville Community College, The Patrick Henry Boys’ Home and the YMCA. Leon volunteered his time at The Prizery and The Good Samaritan. He was also a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) which afforded him and Betty the opportunity to travel to many exciting places. After retiring, Leon opened a consulting firm and worked with ABB and Pacific Gas and Electric.
Leon was known for being an avid golfer and spent many days at the Halifax Country Club with his golf buddies. He was a devoted alumnus of The University of Virginia and remained an enthusiastic supporter of Cavalier Sports throughout his life. He enjoyed his trips to Hilton Head with family and friends and will leave lasting memories to all who knew him.
Leon is survived by his wife of 69 years Betty; two daughters Susan Stanley (Jim) and Cindy Simrill; four grandsons, Jacob Stanley, Andrew Stanley (Lindsey), Tommy Simrill (Lydia) and Jack Simrill; one great grandson, Henry Stanley and one sister, Elvena Hodges.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 30, 2026 at 11:00 am at The First Presbyterian Church in South Boston, Virginia. A reception will immediately follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church.
