Roberta Burks Mimmack, 55, of South Boston, VA and Santa Cruz, CA, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023 surrounded by family at her home in South Boston. Roberta – or Bobbi, as she was known by many – was born on February 18, 1968 in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Robert Tucker Burks and Virginia Roller Burks. She was married for nearly 30 years to Greg Mimmack, of Santa Cruz, CA, who survives.
A graduate of the University of Virginia, Mrs. Mimmack met her husband while in graduate school in California in the early 1990s. In 1998, they moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where they worked and raised a family for over 20 years. Mrs. Mimmack was an English teacher in North Carolina Public Schools, spending the majority of her career at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill where she was a beloved member of the community. In January, 2020, Mrs. Mimmack moved to South Boston to spend more time with her sisters while continuing to teach in North Carolina at Person High School.
Mrs. Mimmack’s family and friends fondly remember her vivacious character, sharp wit, and many interests and talents. She had a great love and dedication for her garden, especially her roses and native plants. She was a master of fiber arts, weaving and crafting beautiful works of art for her garden and home. She was a passionate reader, especially of historical fiction and medieval history, and was devoted to perfect grammar and to solving the daily NYT crossword puzzle, which she enjoyed while cuddling with her loyal Pomeranian companion, Max. She loved her home improvement projects, spending many of her days tiling, building chicken coops, wallpapering, building a fireplace surround, and filling her home and life with beautiful creations bursting with character.
Mrs. Mimmack is survived by her husband, Greg Mimmack, of Santa Cruz, CA; son, Kayden, of Boston, MA; and daughter, Emily, of South Boston. She is also survived by her two beloved sisters, Eleanor Knowlson (Tim) and Judith Burton (Brian), both of South Boston, and her nephews, Spencer Knowlson and Alexander Burton.
