Ruby Jeanne Henderson

Ruby Jeanne Henderson, of Richmond, Virginia, died on May 14, 2021 after a prolonged battle with COPD. She was born on March 11, 1935 in South Boston, Virginia to Hester Ferrel Buchanan Henderson and Owen Clyde Henderson.  She grew up in South Boston with her four older siblings, Edward, James, Gertrude, and John Buchanan.  Her parents and siblings all predeceased her.

 

Ruby attended college in California but received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland.  During her career, she worked in Lexington, Virginia and Charlottesville, Virginia.  For most of her adult life, she lived in the Washington, DC area. She worked as a program analyst for the Navy at the Pentagon.  Her work there took her on many trips abroad.  After retiring from government work, she became a realtor.  Upon finally retiring, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she was nearer family and developed many friendships.

Ruby was an avid tennis player who followed the sport all her life.  Keeping active and in shape was important to her. 

Ruby is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.  They are Nelle and John McDaniel of Bozeman, Montana, Jack and Lynn Reeves of Richmond, Trudy and Jay Melvin of Lexington and Terry and Wilson Whitmore of Natural Bridge, Virginia. She is also survived by JJ and Larry Buchanan of Chicago.

A graveside service will be held on June 5,2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Thad Decker officating.
