Listen to Obituary

Samuel Irwin “Sam” Golightly, Jr. passed away on September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on December 20, 1941, he lived a life marked by warmth, friendliness, and a spirit that drew people to him. He never met a stranger, was very outgoing, and always had a smile, qualities that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

During his working life, Sam served as Court Room U.S. District Court Deputy Clerk for Chief Judge Jackson Kiser. He carried himself with dedication in that role and was respected for his service and was presented with the Liberty Bell Award by the Bar Association.

Outside of work, Sam found joy in the simple and lasting pleasures of life. He enjoyed riding and showing horses with his wife, Marianne, as well as fishing, his dogs and hunting, and he loved the beach. These interests reflected a man who appreciated companionship, the outdoors, and time spent doing what he loved.

Above all, Sam cherished his family. He is survived by his wife, Marianne C. Golightly; his son, Samuel Irwin Golightly, III, and Leigh, of Fuquay Varina, VA; and his daughter, Valerie G. Kramer and Teddy, of Mechanicsville. He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren, Ryan Golightly, Reid Golightly (Delanie), Savannah Ezell (Foster), and Lacey DiGiacomo (Josh). They were an important part of his life, and his memory will remain close to them in the days and years ahead.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Irwin Golightly, Sr.; his mother, Virginia Mae Hatchell Golightly; and his daughter, Kimberly Golightly.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026 at 12:00 noon at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Thad Decker officiating. There will be a reception following the service in the church fellowship hall.
