Thomas Perkins, Jr.

Thomas Perkins, Jr. passed away on July 12, 2020, surrounded by his family. “Tom” retired from Universal Leaf Tobacco Company after 40 years of service and began farming in the Nathalie area, which was a passion of his. He was an avid gardener and was known in the community for his delicious tomatoes. He was a long-time member of the Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed cooking for their fundraisers and member events. He was often called their, “Best stew maker.” It was a joy for him to cook Sunday lunches for his family and he loved having his grandchildren spend time on the farm. He had great pride in his grandchildren who lovingly called him, “Papa.”

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Long Perkins; his parents, Issac Thomas and Lillie Landrum Perkins; brothers Douglas Perkins, Linwood “Pete” Perkins, Woodrow “Whitey” Perkins, and Mary Perkins.

He is survived by his children:

Michael Perkins and his favorite daughter-in-law, Pam, Karen Perkins Fruend and husband, Walter, and Shelia Perkins Carey. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Brooks Gentry, Alyssa Fruend, Reagan Carey, Nicholas Carey and Shea Carey. He is survived by two siblings: Lillie Mae “PeeWee” Perkins Keatts, and Harvey “Rat” Perkins.

In celebration of his life, the family suggest a donation to the Halifax County Cancer Association in lieu of flowers.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Michael Parnell officiating. Burial to follow in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Powell Funeral Home and other times at the home of Karen and Walter Fruend.
