Virla Hazelwood Mills

Mrs. Virla Hazelwood Mills of Scottsburg passed away on February 22, 2026 at the blessed age of 94. She was born in Halifax County on September 24, 1931 to the late John Anderson Hazelwood and the late Dora Mae Hazelwood. She was married for fifty-one years to the late Howard Eugene Mills.

She was a member of South Boston Church of God. Virla was employed and retired from J.P. Stevens after forty-six years of dedicated service. Upon her retirement from J.P. Stevens, she received her CNA Certificate and did what she loved, helping others. She was a loving momma, grandma and friend. She never met a stranger and loved to make people laugh. Her passing will leave a void to all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kenneth Eugene Mills (Linda) of South Boston, Curtis Durant Mills (Cheryl) of Prospect Hill, NC, and Charlotte Lynn Smith (William “Butch”) of Scottsburg; thirteen grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; siblings, Richard Hazelwood of South Boston, Sallie Powell of Roxboro, NC and Harvey Hazelwood (Kay) of Lynch Station; special friend, Rita Smith Ball. She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Lee Mills, two siblings, Minnie Powell and Virginia Irby.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at South Boston Church of God with the Rev. Bruce Hagy and Rev. Dave Akers officiating. Burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. at South Boston Church of God and other times at the home of her daughter, Charlotte and Butch Smith, 1035 Easley Crossing Trail, Scottsburg, VA.
