Woodie Waverly Matthews

Mr. Woodie Waverly Matthews of South Boston, Va passed away September 13, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born in Mecklenburg County March 13, 1936, to the late William Ollie Matthews and the late Jettie Bowen Matthews. Woodie was married for 65 years to Jean Tuck Matthews who survives.

Woodie dedicated 48 years of his life to J.P. Stevens, where his loyalty, worth ethic, and steady presence left a lasting impression on his coworkers and community. Known as a true jack of all trades – though he often humbly called himself “master of none” – Woodie enjoyed woodworking, tinkering as a mechanic, and could fix just about anything he put his hands on.

His greatest joy, however, was sharing his skills and laughter with his friends and family. He will be remembered for his willingness to help others, his down-to-earth nature, and his love of hand-on work.

A Graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2025 1:00 PM, at Halifax Memorial Gardens with Rev. Walter Yancey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the graveside at Powell Funeral Home Chapel and other times at their home.
